Becoming a new Mum is an incredible journey filled with joy, challenges, and a whole lot of adjustments. Trust me those sleepless nights and countless diaper changes, finding time for yourself, especially for exercise, may seem like an impossible task. I’ve found myself trying to find some time for my own well-being, particularly when it comes to exercise. I discovered a gem in my fitness journey – a facility gym that not only welcomes my little boy but also provides an environment where he can watch and learn while I work out. I want to share five strategies that have personally helped me carve out space for exercise in the midst of my busy mom life.
Flexibility in Fitness:
Parenthood teaches you the art of adaptability, and the gym is no exception. I’ve learned to be flexible with my workout routine, embracing shorter, more intense sessions. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and quick, effective exercises allow me to maximise my time at the gym while keeping my little one content.
Turning Workouts into Playtime:
My home gym isn’t just a place to break a sweat; it’s a playground for my child. I’ve incorporated interactive exercises that double as playtime. From incorporating my little one into bodyweight exercises to turning dumbbells into makeshift building blocks, we’ve turned fitness into a fun, shared activity. Babies are naturally curious, and they love to be involved in their mum’s activities. Consider incorporating your baby into your exercise routine. Invest in a stroller suitable for jogging or walking, or explore baby-friendly workout routines. Not only does this allow you to stay active, but it also creates special bonding time between you and your little one.
Utilise Nap Time Wisely:
Take advantage of those precious moments when your baby is napping. Mamas, we’ve all been there the anticipation of that extra nap that holds the promise of a quiet moment to catch our breath. Instead of catching up on household chores, allocate some of that time for your workout. Whether it’s a home workout, a yoga session, or a quick online fitness class, using nap time wisely allows you to focus on your health and well-being.
Set Realistic Goals:
Setting realistic and achievable fitness goals has been crucial for me. Instead of aiming for a lengthy daily workout, I focus on consistency. Whether it’s a 10-minute yoga session or a quick jog around the block, setting achievable goals helps me stay motivated and prevents feelings of overwhelm.
As a new Mum, finding time for exercise is can be a big challenge, but it’s not impossible. These strategies have helped me through the exercise into the beautiful chaos of motherhood. Remember, it’s okay to start small, celebrate the process and most importantly, prioritise your well-being. Here’s to embracing the journey of motherhood and finding our strength, one workout at a time.
