From the moment I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to breastfeed. It was important to me, not just for the bond, but for all the health benefits for myself and my baby. I wanted to nurse my son, so much so that I didn’t want a plan B.
I will be sharing my experiences and, hopefully, some knowledge and wisdom along the way!
Soon as I got into the recovery after my C – Section the nurse place my baby on my chest and began nursing him. My boy latched very quickly and comfortably, Learning how to breastfeed and plenty of skin to skin cuddles is just an amazing experience, we both love the bonding time we spend together during feeds. I used to be so nervous about supporting his head, how to angle him so that he could latch correctly. I remember saying to the nurse ‘Nothing is coming out’ haha and then the midwives would say “Don’t worry, it will happen. She was right!
Every Mum’s Journey Is Different
It’s so important to reach out and take advantage of all the brilliant support networks out there for first-time mums, you’ll be surprised just how much a different perspective or suggestion may help improve or enhance your feeding journey. We all have struggles and while one mum’s feeding journey may look simple, and some not. For my experience It had been difficult for the couple of days an the next I get soreness and red but we were told this was normal and would go away once we’d got the hang of things. I use Medela Purelan Lanolin Cream which gives you fast relief for sore nipples and dry skin that creates a protective layer on skin’s surface and is absorbed deeply by the skin where it rehydrates from within.
Helping Breast Milk Production
The production of breast milk primarily depends on your baby’s needs. The more your baby nurses, the more milk you’ll have. In my experience I had been pumping in between feeds and the pump I use is the Medela Swing Maxi Double Electric Breast Pump along with the Medela disposable breast pads .
Oats are great for breastmilk production, Flaxseed is also really great. Try sprinkling some over oats or add it to smoothies. Lactation cookies are a great alternative. Usually they are made up of oats, flaxseed, other seeds and various great ingredients to help your body in milk production. These were my favourite which I kept eating them everyday because they taste so nice.
Making Breastfeeding Work For You
I have been breastfeeding for about 1 year to my Son. I felt like a bit of my self had restored and I honestly felt a bit more like me again. when our breast-feeding journey came to an end I felt like I wanted to carry on because of the mastitis I have been getting every time Im tempered to stop. Using the ‘Medela Keep Cool Maternity & Nursing Bra’ had to be the best support for me. Every mum is different. Some may want to stop breastfeeding earlier than others want to carry on and that’s ok, it’s about what works for you and your baby. It’s important to remind yourself just how far you’ve come in your feeding journey.
Regardless of what method you chose, we are all amazing for providing our baby with everything they need! It’s good to remind yourself that this is a brand-new experience for you and your baby. It will take time to get into a rhythm but being relaxed and giving yourself grace is so important. It takes some time.
Happy feeding!
