These past year have seriously flown by, and I am amazed at how he has grown. The first birthday of a child is a truly special milestone, and as parents, we all want to make it memorable. Instead of a traditional cake stand, we let our little one eat the cake right off the floor, well with a white sheet on it. I’ll share our unique and delightful experience of this unconventional cake smash celebration. As we brainstormed ways to celebrate our son’s first birthday, we wanted to do something that would be fun and unforgettable. We’d seen plenty of cake smash photoshoots, and they always brought smiles to our faces. However, we wanted to put our own twist on it we decided to celebrate with a cake smash at home like no other.
To prepare for this unique celebration, we set the stage in our living room with our white wall, a spacious and easily cleanable area. We placed a large, clean white sheet on the ground to create a designated space for the cake smash. This way, we could contain the mess while ensuring that our son had plenty of room to explore the cake.
For the cake itself, we went for a simple and white design. The cake was so beautiful with a number “1” on top made by my Sister In Law. We wanted our son to have the full sensory experience of touching and tasting the cake, so we chose a delicious, vanilla sponge cake that he would truly enjoy.
As our guests gathered around we all got excited. We dressed our son in an adorable Cream Baby Dungarees and a beige T Shirt outfit and placed him in front of the cake. The excitement in his eyes was amazing at first he didn’t know what was happening until our Son cautiously examined the cake with his little hands. It was pure magic. Watching our son explore the cake with such wonder and delight was an incredible experience. We snapped countless pictures and laughed so much.
As expected, the aftermath of this cake smash was quite the mess, but we were prepared. We rolled up the the sheet containing most of the cake remnants, and gave our son a bath to clean him up. The cleanup was surprisingly easy, and the memories we created were well worth it.
Here are some steps to help you get ready for this memorable celebration:
Choosing the Perfect Cake: One of the first steps in preparing for a cake smash is choosing the perfect cake. Parents often opt for a soft and baby-friendly cake, typically free from common allergens, and not overly sweet. The cake can be designed to match a particular theme or color scheme for the celebration, making it both visually appealing and delicious.
Setting the Scene: Whether indoors or outdoors, creating a designated area for the cake smash is crucial. Parents usually use a plastic sheet or tarp to protect the floor and make cleanup more manageable. Decorations are often chosen to match the theme of the party and the cake smash. Colorful balloons, banners, and other decorations create a festive atmosphere that adds to the excitement.
The Outfit: Dressing the baby in an adorable and comfortable outfit is an essential part of the cake smash. It should match the theme or color scheme and, more importantly, be easy to clean, as it’s likely to get covered in cake and frosting.
The Joy of Exploration: During the cake smash, the baby is encouraged to explore the cake with their hands, often smashing it, tasting it, and generally revealing in the experience. The result is a heartwarming and hilarious series of photos and videos that capture the pure joy and wonder of a child’s first encounter with a birthday cake.
Capturing the Moments: Parents and guests often have cameras or smartphones at the ready to capture the memorable moments. If possible, having an extra pair of hands to help with photography allows everyone to fully enjoy the event without worrying about missing any precious shots.
The Aftermath and Cleanup: Once the cake smash is over, the cleanup begins. Wet wipes, paper towels, and baby-friendly cleaning solutions are essential for tidying up both the baby and the cake-smash area. After a good clean, the baby usually gets a fresh change of clothes, and the celebration continues.
A Tradition to Remember: The first baby cake smash is not just a delightful mess but a cherished tradition that captures the essence of celebrating a child’s first birthday. It provides parents with beautiful and hilarious memories to cherish and share with family and friends. It’s a moment when the joy, laughter, and love of the day are perfectly embodied in a sweet and sticky experience.
If you’re looking for a way to make your child’s first birthday unforgettable, consider trying this with your amazing cake smash celebration. It’s a fantastic way to capture the joy and wonder of your little one’s big day, while letting them explore, play, and eat cake in the most fun and messy way possible. Trust me I’am happy I captured all the moments and what I always love to do is look back on how much he has grown.
