When Al B. Sure first released “Night & Day”, no one could predict its immense success. My Husband Tony Sway has been a huge fan and inspirational of Al.B Sure since day one with his release of his debut album, “In Effect Mode.” The album was a sensational hit in the 1988 but one track that stood out to me and remains timeless is “Nite and Day.” The song’s sensual falsetto vocals and its earworm melody made it an instant classic, blended traditional soul with New Jack Swing.
When my Husband played Al. B Sure on the keyboard, I remember he asked me to do a remix of of Night & Day. Listening to Al B. Sure’s tracks and loving all the songs I knew at that point I had to channel a different set of emotions when remixing the song. The keys may be different, the melody might shift, and the overall tone might change. It’s like revisiting an old story but telling it from a different perspective. The goal was clear: recapture the narrative magic of the original, but with a twist from a female version.
While recording Night & Day I adjust my vocal techniques to make it more female-centric a different style, Changing a song’s perspective can offer a fresh take, but it’s essential to maintain its original emotion and essence and not just changing words.
Setting the Scene
Drawing inspiration from the song’s title and theme, the “Night & Day” symbolised d by contrasting scenes of daylight shooting the video in Seattle WA on the beach. I poured hours into the pre-production. From learning my vocal ranges to handpicking the right background,I wanted my unique style with a lot of brightness and colour, everything needed to align perfectly.. The location sets the video’s mood and atmosphere.
I remember the day we filmed it was such a hot day on the beach wearing my jeans an the cold waves splashed all over me that was such a fun day. Till this day with over 791,043 views on youtube I couldn’t believe the amount of love I got from my fans with the unexpected remix twists of the content – the video seemed to strike a chord with audiences worldwide.
Music has the power to influence, inspire, and invoke deep emotions. For many of us, our musical journey starts by emulating the icons we admire. For me, singing to Night & Day with a soulful rhythms and hypnotic melodies of Al B. Sure has been blessing and I couldn’t of done it without the help from my Husband who guided me along the way as he spent countless hours learning his signature style, playing the keyboard, understanding the nuances of his vocal range, and appreciating the depth of his lyrics and to pass it down to me an teaching me from what he knows has been a true blessing & grateful.
It’s a beautiful blend transitioning from singing Al B. Sure’s iconic tracks to crafting my own version, echoing the past but firmly rooted in the present evoking nostalgia and honouring the legend himself. This music found my rhythm, my voice, and my path. And for that, I’ll forever be grateful to the melodies of Al B. Sure! and the journey they set me upon.
